SMS Future Plans

The development of the BCLN SMS simply helps members pool resources to simplify the management of students.  We'd rather our teachers spend their time helping students rather than keeping track of them.  Given this, BCLN would be just as happy to focus all energy on resource development.  Thus, we're happy to answer the following questions.

Q: Will Aspen replace the need for an SMS?

A:  A number of us have attended the Aspen previews and, although, there are lot's of new features coming, the management of student accounts in Moodle (and related functions) will not be covered within Aspen.  Thus, we will continue to need a DL SMS.

Q: Will BCLN merge the current BCLN SMS with the SD73 SMS project?

A:  With the intention to use member investment as efficiently as possible, we are very seriously looking into a merger between these projects.  There are still specifics to be sorted out (to ensure we can bring the expected features into the new tool), but we are feeling quite confident at this point that this would be a good direction for the membership.

Q:  If the merger happens, when would it happen?

A:  At this point, the plan is to merge code through the 2014/15 school year, then release it as the "new SMS" in the summer of 2015.

Q:  How is the development of the BCLN SMS going to progress?

A:  With the likelihood of a merger, we will be careful about spending membership funds on the existing SMS.  Given this, we will need to ensure that we have a solid tool over the next year.  We will do our best to find the right balance here.
